Having retired at the end of August 2022, Dr Ivan Cohen, Emeritus Professor in Finance and Economics, gave his ex-augural lecture to a large crowd at the University as well as to those who attended remotely.
This included several members of faculty, many alumni, some current students and other friends (mostly online from overseas, from the USA to Israel).
Dr Cohen’s lecture, which was introduced by Professor Sabine Spangenberg, was entitled, “The Schismogenesis of Money”. In the lecture, Dr Cohen examined and attempted to reconcile the two main competing theories which purport to explain the origins of money: (i) from barter, and (ii) from credit. Using a wealth of historical examples this lecture also provided insights into the nature and role of money which continue to be appropriate for the modern era.
Dr Cohen said, “The event was brilliantly organised by Professor Mary Robert. Those in attendance enjoyed some excellent post-lecture conversation over refreshments.”
